Dig For Victory
With the seas once again a battlefield, Britain could no longer rely on imports from overseas. The ‘Dig for Victory’ campaign was a huge drive for self-sufficiency, encouraging civilians to transform private gardens, public parks, playing fields, railway embankments, flower beds and every available slither of land into vegetable patches. By 1943 there were over 1.4 million allotments in Britain, producing over a million tons of vegetables that year.
This new gift range from Kent & Stowe tells the story of the ‘Dig for Victory’ campaign using newly digitised images form IWM’s vast collections alongside fun facts that give a fascinating insight into life on the home front. For example, you might be surprised to discover that even the moat at the Tower of London was given over to growing vegetables and it is said that the Royal Family sacrificed their beloved rose beds for growing onions.
Recent years have seen a renewed interest in ‘growing your own’ and this unique range aims to inspire people of all ages to embrace this interest and develop new skills through producing fresh home-grown produce.
